Making the Most Out of Brain Science: Strengthening the Brain with the Help of Community

A lot of interesting things were discussed with Daniel Amen, MD on the webinar last night. Including the differences between the male and female brain, how balancing your hormones can strengthen your nervous system, and why some anxiety may actually be good for your brain.

There were 8,774 viewers and it was exciting to see how much of the globe tuned in. Many countries were involved, including:

Canada 1,081
United Kingdom 429
Australia 412
Germany 58
Mexico 52
Israel 25
South Africa 23
Argentina 21
Malaysia 11
Japan 8
Turkey 8
Belgium 7
Croatia 5
Poland 4
Isle of Man 2
Libya 1

The comment board is buzzing with 116 (at the time of this writing) insightful takes on my webinar with Daniel, and I just wanted to highlight a few that stuck out to me.

“Glad to hear some confirmation that thyroid functions, Vitamin D, and hormones all play such a vital role in our mental health. For me the concept of the ‘Dinosaur Brain’ made a lot of sense. First thing this morning, I decided to cut down my sugar consumption radically. Refreshing to hear, unashamedly, the spiritual aspect brought into this academic discussion. Daniel, keep up the Good work!”

– Gene Kol, Psychotherapist & Lifestyle Consultant, UK

“I found the information from Dr. Amen to be fascinating! How the brain responds to our diets, hormone levels, and stress was very good information. While we often hear about the negative effects of sugar I’m not sure that most of us are aware of the prevalence. I also thought the information on consuming ‘healthy fats.’ while not new, directed us to cause and effect insights. Thank you for this great series. I look forward to the next presentations.”

– Donna Holz, Social Work, Pewaukee, WI

“I was most impressed with today’s presentation and consider it a gold mine to have access to the quality of presenters. So much valuable information. I particularly liked the debrief at the end with Ronald Seigel and Kelly McGonigal. Some very different perspectives. Ruth you also did an excellent job. I look forward to next week. Thank you”

– Melinda, Spry Transitions Coach

“As a psychotherapist, I think this information will help depersonalize highly charged couples in my office.”

– Stacy Korfist, Branches Center for Counseling, Redondo Beach & Temecula, California

“Thank you for this presentation. It was very interesting to hear how hormonal changes may affect the brain as well as male/female differences. I think that it was important that Ron and Kelly tempered the ultimate course as how to manage hormonal brain changes.”

– Robert Haile, MD, Costa Rica

About talk back ,finding balance with Dr Siegel.Once a person learned me the following (i think it is approximately what dr. siegel said).
If you have a problem (fear, worry….),you can deal with it in different ways!
He suggested : imagine you draw a horiziontal line and you put 3 points on it ,1 in the middle ,1 extreme right,1 extreme left.
On the extreme right point ,are the people who are totaly drowning in their problems ( extreme worry, rerunning thoughts..)
On the lextreme left point, are the people who are totaly denying that there is any problem at all.
And between those 2 points are all the other degrees of dealing with a problem ,the art is to become in the middle and be ome so more balanced to deal with problems.
We can always look at that imaginary line and try to see where am I now and try to become more balanced.
Meditation is one of those techniques to become more balanced. We learn to stop and stay with everything .
I am so glad that person learned me that,it has already been so so helpfull many times.
I do not know but it seems a bit the same dr, Siegel wanted to say.

Ruth, thank you for offering these free webinars on the brain. There is so very much useful, valuable information in such a short time. It might help if your questions were shorter and took less time, so the speaker would have more time to provide even more of the important information each one has to offer. I treasure each word Dr. Amen spoke, except when he mentioned omitting rice from our diet. Most rice eaters in other parts of the world are not and have not been obese or overweight even though some of them eat rice 3 times a day in some cultures. Rice seems to be a major staple in their diets, so I do not understand how that particular food, though a complex carbohydrate, is detrimental to our health.
Looking forward to the next webinar. Thank you again for offering these free.

Thank you for an interesting and provocative broadcast. As an executive coach I was particularly intrigues with the ohysiological differences between the male and female brain which cause the profound differences in cognitive and behavioral styles. Dr. Amend’s research findings add another component of insight to personality and temperament style differences. It adds significant value to the importance of inclusiveness and to the positive role the female executive can play in the Board Room.
I’m looking forward to receiving the transcripts and tools as well as to the next broadcast!

The session with Dr. Amen was very informative. Even though as a physician I was familiar with most of what he shared, I would say that his approach put my info into a new perspective. I loved the phrase he coined; the ” Dinosaur Syndrome”… I liked how he compared the male vs. female brain. I also loved the fact that he was not bashful about his faith and how he shared what he had in heart about the epidemic of obesity.
I do many lectures and presentations for college students as well as community organizations about mental health, emotional trauma and the brain. I will definitely use what I learned from him.
When can we get the transcripts?
I have registered for Gold membership with CME points. I am getting extra material for CME?

I relish these webinars every time. The only times I have missed them have been when I was in some sort of brain fog! Sounds like a lot of folks are foggy to me!
One detail that stands out from Daniel Amen’s observations was this one…Single women tend to live longer than married women, while married men tend to live longer than single men. Makes sense does it not…men are not motivated to be care-taking and relational. They tend to be testosterone driven- *taking*, not giving.
Dr. Amen also pointed out that the male prefrontal cortex is larger in men (the whole brain is) but he did not mention that women have more neurons in that smaller mass of tissue. This I got from reading Dr. Louanne Brizandine. There was no mention too, of glial matter, and I believe glial matter is crucial to the brain’s process.
How we women are wired for leadership is not helpful…when men are wired to suppress her from leading.

Just wanted to add that Denmark was represented too 🙂
I enjoy the webinars very much, but agree with Ineke Rienks from Holland: It would be wonderful to have the opportunity to listen just a little bit earlier. It goes past my midnight the way it is now. Would it be possible to widen the listening opportunities with 12 or more hours, then people all over the world could fit it into daytime, or at least ‘awake-time’.
Thank you for sharing this great work with us!

It always surprises me that when I offer something for free, people complain about how it is not convenient for them. I have consumed all of these webinars in the past and I would purchase the program if the schedule weren’t right for me and if it were really important to me to get it and I weren’t willing to invest the money, I would stay up late, set my alarm or get up early.
I have learned to invest not only time but money in things that matter and things that will help me evolve in new directions and become a better clinician and have a deeper understanding of the world and human experience.

      Bill ,
I forgive you because after this course I now understand that men have less empathy (people with sleeping problems, less monney…)and they should have a problem with seeing/feeling their is a problem and admitting there is a problem.
But as women we should take care of those men so that they live longer. So,that is whiy I forgive you !
      Doctor Amen,
What as women can we do when men have less empathy and they don’t see the problem at once?
And we also want that they do not disappear from our earth to quick?
Please, not just a normal solution ,but one that optimises them on a high level?!!!!!!!! Urgent!

I have always appreciated Dr Amen’s talks and I thought this new information on the gender differences, as well as hormonal issues, was another very valuable lesson. I also applaud you for the Talk Back session. I think that part was almost as valuable as the presentation and other webinars like this should use this as well. People can both accept or reject new information too quickly, depending on how well they know the speaker. Getting other professional’s views allows us to put the speaker’s comments in perspective.
I also wanted to echo the comments from others in different time zones about the very limited listening times. Every similar type of free webinar class I have seen has a 24 hr window to listen. This is very important info and everyone should have a chance to hear it if at all possible. I would suggest a re-broadcast of this first session with a 24 hr timetable prior to the 2nd session.
