How to Tell High-Masking Autism from OCD, PTSD, BPD, and Other Common Diagnoses

masking autismmasking autismWhy is autism so often missed or misdiagnosed?

By the time Sarah found her way into a therapy office, she’d already collected eight other diagnoses: anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and BPD among others. But none of them quite captured what was going on with her.

And Sarah’s not an outlier.

That’s because our standard assessments only target particular presentations of autism.

Everyone who doesn’t fit the picture, especially the client who spent a lifetime learning to pass as neurotypical, can get overlooked or diagnosed as something else entirely.

Beyond that, the effort it takes a client to mask their autism can end up costing them dearly.

That’s why we invited Kory Andreas, LCSW-C to present an all-new live workshop:

— New Short Course —

High-Masking Autism: What Your Training Missed

In this workshop, Kory will walk you through the intake language, differential markers, and case-conceptualization shifts that will help you catch what standard screening was never designed to see.

  • The average number of misdiagnoses a high-masking client collects before anyone considers autism
  • Why autism is often mistaken for OCD, PTSD, BPD, and other common diagnoses
  • What masking costs clients physically, emotionally, and relationally (even when it helps them appear successful)
  • How years of suppressing autistic traits can create an accumulating pattern of trauma
  • How to separate trauma responses from autistic traits when the two are deeply intertwined
  • The intake questions that surface masking instead of rewarding it
  • The autism profile most graduate training never covers (and how to recognize it)
  • Why DBT, SSRIs, and standard mindfulness protocols tend to underperform for this population (and what to use instead)
  • How undiagnosed neurodivergence shows up across a family tree (and why you should bring it up during intake)
  • How to spot high-masking autism when eye contact, verbal ability, and social fluency appear to rule it out

This workshop will show you how to identify high-masking autism, distinguish it from common differential diagnoses, and make practical changes that can improve engagement and treatment outcomes.

The live workshop will take place on Tuesday, August 25 from 12-3pm ET.

Kory will take questions from participants of the live workshop periodically throughout.

In addition, by registering for the workshop, you’ll also receive the video recording, presentation slides and transcript (and all are yours to keep forever).

  • The transcript makes it easy to go back and double check concepts, citations and names that are mentioned
  • We put in a table of contents to make it easy for you to find the exact part of the webinar you need
  • Having the concepts already written allows you to take notes on how you’re going to use the ideas rather than transcribing the ideas
  • Some people simply learn better by reading than by listening or watching
  • You will be able to print out and share techniques presented in the session with your patients

Angela Lawrence

“I really liked being able to follow along with the transcripts as I listened…it was nice not to feel like I had to take notes. I really feel like I remember more when I both hear and see at the same time.”

Mary Ellen McNaughton, Masters in Counseling, Psychology Counselor
Kelowna, British Colombia, Canada
