Imago Relationship Therapy: Theory and Therapy of Couplehood
Harville Hendrix, PhD

Imago Relationship Therapy, based on the "individual" paradigm, is a relational paradigm that has implications for all forms of therapy. The focus of Imago therapy is the relationship, with the assumption that interpersonal changes are paralleled by changes in subjectivity. The relationship becomes the context for personal healing and growth that facilitates connection. This workshop will introduce the basic theory and therapeutic processes of Imago Relationship Therapy, demonstrate its application to conflicted couples in committed partnerships, and describe the three stages of intimate partnership: partner selection, the inevitable power struggle and its resolution. Core issues will include working with the "difficult couple," how to transform destructive conflict into creative tension, helping couples become dialogical rather than adversarial, and how to discern when couple therapy can help. At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to describe the key difference between the relationship paradigm and the individual paradigm, demonstrate the Imago Dialogue Process, and describe the differences between an Imago and traditional therapist. This workshop will be credited towards certification for qualified therapists who wish to pursue training towards becoming a Certified Imago Therapist.
