Mindfulness and Psychotherapy
Ronald Siegel, PsyD
Mindfulness is a deceptively simple way of relating to experience that has been successfully practiced for over 2,500 years to alleviate human suffering. Recently, clinicians are enthusiastically discovering that mindfulness holds great promise both for their own personal development and as a way to enhance therapeutic relationships. It is also the central ingredient in a number of new empirically supported treatments, and is proving to be a remarkably powerful technique to augment virtually any form of psychotherapy. Participants in this class will learn how to practice mindfulness themselves, when and how to introduce mindfulness techniques to patients, and how to implement step-by-step, mindfulness based programs for treating anxiety, chronic pain, and stress-related medical disorders. We will also examine creative ways to deal with the contraindications, obstacles and challenges that arise when working with particular disorders and personalities.
