Mindfulness: An Antidote to Narcissism
Ronald D. Siegel, PsyD
We seem to be hard wired to look out for ourselves--a perfectly natural
impulse that unfortunately leads to constant suffering. What would a day be like
without concerns about our health, appearance, success, longevity or lovability?
While Western psychology focuses on narcissism as a character disorder, mindfulness
practice leads us to see that even normal, "healthy narcissism" separates us from one
another and generates anxiety and sadness in the face of life's inevitable
disappointments. This workshop examines how we and our patients create our
identities out of the moment-to-moment flow of experience, and how mindfulness
practice can bring freedom and fulfillment by helping us to see through our
counterproductive attempts to protect and enhance our "selves" in the pursuit
of happiness.
