Grieving Mindfully
Sameet Kumar, PhD
Grief and loss are universal aspects of our lives, yet for each individual, a unique
experience. As therapists, we frequently find our clients in acute distress, often due
to the loss of a relationship or underlying life-value. That's why a thorough
understanding of grief with its potential for positive renewal is
indispensable. Unfortunately, many treatment modalities tend to
treat the emotions that accompany grief as a pathological
reaction to life's natural unpredictability. This
workshop will synthesize recent findings on how
mindfulness meditation can help facilitate a
pathway of resilience for our grieving
patients and for ourselves as
professional caregivers.
The relationship
between
mindfulness
and grief is
by no means recent.
Dating back to the origins
of mindfulness meditation, we
see it orienting practitioners
toward a more compassionate, creative,
and meaningful existence while addressing the
inherent distress of the grief journey. In this workshop,
we will examine how mindfulness can be applied theoretically
and experimentally to the suffering that accompanies loss with the
goal of revitalizing the experience of living.
