Focusing in the Midst of Illness:
A Method for Alleviating Stress and Suffering

Joan Klagsbrun, PhD

Focusing is a gentle method of directly attending to one's physical and emotional pain, rather than ignoring or denying it. The Focusing approach enables you to communicate directly with both distressful and hopeful feelings in such a way that equilibrium and well-being are restored. In Focusing, you learn to listen deeply to yourself and bring attention to the full range of what you are feeling. Research indicates that this method reduces stress levels, enhances coping strategies, and encourages positive behavioral changes. This workshop teaches the Focusing process, as it applies to individual cases of physical and emotional pain, and demonstrates the results of a Focusing Oriented Treatment.
