Focusing:
A Mind/Body Method for Diminishing Pain and Suffering

Joan Klagsbrun, PhD

When we are in pain, our natural inclination is to reduce the pain by distancing ourselves from it. Focusing, a gentle and profound method of listening deeply to oneself, brings your attention to the pain, and engages us in a process of communicating with it, rather than trying to ignore or suppress it. This approach often enables us to make sense of what the body is communicating to us, and we can take steps for healing emotional distress and suffering, even in the midst of pain. This workshop will teach participants the Focusing process as it is used in working with pain and illness and will present patient cases with different kinds of physical pain (neck, back, and migraine).
