504
Emotion Rituals:
A Resource for Therapist and Clients

David W. McMillan, PhD

Human emotion is immensely complex and seemingly uncontrollable at times. Though it is difficult to think our way out of emotional knots, it is possible to use rituals to feel our way back to emotional well-being. To do this, we must understand the dynamics of the nine discrete basic emotions, each serving a distinct function. Most of us use only a few of these nine emotions, creating an overdependence that leads to emotional traps that ensnare us and can appear interminable. Emotional rituals can liberate us from these traps and return us to an emotional balance.
