Practicing the Lost Art of Compassion:
Practical Methods for Promoting Health and Joy through
Positive Emotions
Lorne Ladner, PhD
Our
positive emotions are at the very core of psychology. They
are essential to our ability to be happy and content with
our lives, and they also play pivotal roles in the quality
of our relationships with others, as well as in our physical
and psychological well-being. Yet, most of us never learn
practical methods for developing and increasing these
positive emotions. In recent years, neuroscientists and
other researchers have found that simple techniques used for
centuries by Buddhist meditators can give people a mastery
over their own emotional lives. We can bring about internal
changes by learning simple techniques that use our thoughts,
memories, and imagination. These changes not only decrease
stress, but improve our physical health and aid us in
finding deep joy and meaning in our relationships, our work,
and our lives. |
