Ethical Dilemmas, Part I:
How Conflicting Values and Good Intentions Create Ethical
Questions
Elaine Stevens, LISW
The codes of ethics for
healthcare professionals have a great deal in common and are
the basis for our decision making. Problems occur when we
face situations where at least two of our values are in
direct conflict: "Right vs. Right". Each value is valid, yet
a decision to act on one of the values will result in the
violation of the other. Since inaction is not an option, we
struggle to make the best choice. In this workshop four
models of typical dilemmas will be identified to help
clarify the conflict. Principles of moral philosophy will be
introduced to facilitate our understanding of the
consequences of our choices. |
