Shades of the Rainbow:
Messages of Hope in End of Life Care

Maggie Callanan, RN

When people faced with terminal illness are approaching death, they often have remarkable experiences and seem to develop an expanded awareness. This is called Nearing Death Awareness. Recognizing and appreciating the needs of patients who have had these experiences as well as helping family members and other caregivers to understand and appreciate these phenomena are critical to the holistic patient care that is the keystone of high quality end of life care giving.
